I think it would be good.

We need to decide on a technical solution for the downloads

One easy to maintain way would be rsync and have some sort of script pick a host at random. The randomizing could be done via DNS so that all mirror hosts would have the same dns name, that way hen you ask for the ip of day dl.merp.com you get a new IP every time, but that would on the other hand expose us a bit, since you actually get all ip addresses, only the order is going to change.

Sorry for the delay in responding.

We are pretty much already setup as far as the mirror sourcing. We use rsync with access control permissions setup.

the source server is:

dev.merp.com

And yes, this is the place to discuss that information.

As for the suggestion using "round robin" DNS entries, that is not necessary since the existing Plone Random-Mirror prodouct does that without having to make the list publich in DNS (it picks the next mirror server listed). The problem is that it does not first CHECK to see if that server is actually online.

The next problem is that some mirror sites get out of sync with the source server, and so the links and directory structures become "broken" when a user clicks the link.

So, I/we need to "hack" the RandomMirror to have some extra functionality. This is a Python-based product. There is a recent volunteer who programs in Java, who might be able to come up with another suggestions possibly.

I'll post the specific login information for the different branches of the mirror archives soon. First though, each that wants to mirror, you need to install rsync on your server.

Then email your IP or DNS name to webmaster@merp.com. Then we will email you the username and password that will be uniquely assigned to your specific server.

I'll post in the next few days the size of each Archive segment, so you can decide which portions you wish to host on your mirror server.

Cheers!
